Two shifts: 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM Registration and warm up begins at 9am so if we have at least 2 Rotarians arriving by 8am to help with set up that would be great. And those early volunteers can leave early if they want. Our event is scheduled to end at 12pm and then we will need help with clean up so if there are at least 2 Rotarians to help with the stations/scoring, and arrive by 9:30am before we kick things off with the National Anthem, it would be great if they could help with the clean up which is fairly easy with multiple hands. |

Rotary District 5340 is very proud to announce the third annual “Operation Flags for Vets”. Rotarians from the district will place small American flags at gravesites at Miramar National Cemetery (MNC) to commemorate Memorial Day.
Unlike other national cemeteries, MNC has not had the funding to support the tradition to place American flags at gravesites on Memorial Day. The San Diego Rotary Community in coordination with MNC leadership and the Department of Veteran Affairs, plan to place about 20,000 American Flags at the gravesites of every veteran interred at MNC. The “Operation Flags for Vets” initiative extends San Diego’s decades long Memorial Day tradition of honoring the service of Fort Rosecrans veterans to include our nation's military veterans interred at MNC.
Members of the Rotary District 5340 Military Coordinating Committee (DMCC) are coordinating this project that will honor our fallen heroes. On Saturday, May 23, 2026, approximately 400 local Rotarian volunteers will converge on Miramar National Cemetery to respectfully place American flags at gravesites. Flags will remain in place to reverently and beautifully adorn the gravesites and serve as an inspirational backdrop for ceremonies to be held in the cemetery on May 25th and 26th (Memorial Day). On Tuesday, May 26th Rotarians will again gather at Miramar National Cemetery to remove the flags for storage until next year.
We are in particular need of section leaders to hand out flags so please consider volunteering for that position. If you can also volunteer for flag removal on Tuesday, May 27th we would be very appreciative.
This is a project funded entirely by Rotary and Rotarians. There is a donation button on the website and anything you could contribute would be appreciated. Miramar National Cemetery is providing logistical support assistance with parking and directing volunteers in the cemetery.
