Program for Tuesday, June 21, 2016

Our program for Tuesday June 21 is Randy Jones. Randy is an All-Time favorite San Diego Padres pitcher and is a Charter member of the San Diego Padres Hall of Fame. In his career, the brilliant sinker ball specialist --with superb control -- set numerous baseball pitching records while earning countless awards for his performances. Randy was a fan favorite known for his quick work and once won a game in 1 hour and 31 minutes.

When you think of breakfast sausage, it's Jimmy Dean. Chicken…Colonel Sanders. Now when you think of barbeque, it's Randy Jones. The easily approachable and personable Jones became famous as one of the outstanding Major League baseball pitchers in the 1970's and '80's. Randy brings his “major league” style of excellence to the food business with his Original Ballpark Barbeque sauce, based on a recipe developed by his grandfather. He also operated a major catering and special events company, the historic Randy Jones Big Stone Lodge Restaurant, and a popular barbeque concession at San Diego Qualcomm Stadium. Randy's Original Baseball Barbeque Sauce remains a fan favorite sold at Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego Padres Stores, Petco Park and specialty markets in Southern California.

Randy's extensive record as an innovator and businessman encompasses activities as wide-ranging as having founded a successful alternative energy company, executive management positions with AGS Foods - serving worldwide military commissary divisions, and the specialty merchandising and advertising company, Tournament Providers.

While earning his bachelor's degree in business administration at Chapman University in the Los Angeles area, Randy was a stalwart of the university baseball team. Drafted by the San Diego Padres in 1972, and with a record of 22-14 he won the 1976 Cy Young Award, baseball's top pitching accolade while setting Padres' records of 316 innings pitched, with 25 complete games. Randy's achievements were recognized with his selection as National League starting pitcher in the 1976 All-Star Game, which he also won. The previous season he was San Diego's first pitcher to appear in an All-Star Game.

The affable lefty is the spokesperson for the San Diego Padres, hosts his own radio show heard throughout Southern California and has starred in his sportsman television program, “Randy Jones' Strike Zone” on the Outdoor Channel, seen nationally in 85 million homes since January 2005. His ongoing involvement with the Padres and on-air hosting on radio provide many door-opening opportunities and media exposure.

He is a radio and TV sports personality and still serves as a representative for the Padres in the San Diego sports and business community.

Jeanne MacLaren is RB Sunrise Rotarian of the Year!

l -r: President Alison Farrin and Jeanne MacLaren
Jeanne MacLaren, RB Sunrise Rotary Foundation Chair, was recognized on Friday evening, June 17, 2016 as Rotarian of the Year.  Jeanne was honored for her leadership in directing the club's fundraising efforts on behalf of the Rotary Foundation.  For the last 2 years we not only maintained our EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year) status with every member contribuiting to the Rotary Foundation, but also the club's contributions to the foundation doubled!

It has to be noted that Jeanne has been very busy in the last 2 years. Not only has she contributed greatly to our club, she also took leadership positions at our district.  During most of this time, Jeanne also was the caregiver for her husband, Tom who passed away several months ago.

We are thrilled to have Jeanne as a member because she brings a passion for Rotary with her.  Jeanne is a past president of a club in northern California and their loss is our gain.

Congratulations to Jeanne for the richly deserved recognition!

President Alison Demoted on Friday, June 17, 2016

On Friday, June 17, 2016, RB Sunrise Rotary hosted a Demotion dinner for President Alison Farrin at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo.  In attendance was Alison’s family, including husband Mark Farrin, son Kris Farrin, daughter Lisa Farrin Arroyo, Lisa’s husband Joe Arroyo, and their daughter Astrid Farrin-Arroyo.  To show their respect to Alison for her outstanding job as President over the past year, also in attendance were DG Janice Kurth and her husband Matt, and DG-Elect Marilyn Sanderson.

As Alison is an avid horsewoman, the theme of the party had a western flavor with people dressing up in cowboy and cowgirl outfits.

The grub consisted of hamburger and fixins’, potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, corn, and condiments galore.  The meal ended with everyone’s favorite, chocolate cake.

With Paul Gorman the Master of Ceremonies, there was definitely a lot of horsing around, bad horse jokes (thanks Kendra) and other such frivolities.  Carl Kruse and his cohorts performed a skit imitating Alison on a long-distance endurance ride, showcasing their acting skills with each riding “stick horses” until they dropped out, except for the “blond” who won the race! Alison has completed the real grueling Teviis 100 mile endurance ride twice in the last 2 years. This is a competition that brings endurance riders to compete the 100 mile ride in a day.  Because the ride is monitored by veterinarians, riders and their mounts are protected and it is an accomplishment to be able to complete the ride.  About half of the riders each year do not complete the event. In fact, Alison attempted this ride in the past and her horse was not cleared by the veterinarian to even compete!  Alison did not give up and was rewarded with very respectable finishes.

Former DG Carl Kruse recognized Lisa Farrin Arroyo as a Paul Harris Fellow and Alison Farrin as a 4 x Paul Harris Fellow. When it came time to finally demote Alison, former DG and past-President Carl Kruse and past-President Steve Saylor presented her numerous plaques and awards for her outstanding job as President of RB Sunrise Rotary 2015-2016.  Past-President Karen Mortimer then presented Alison with her Past-President pin that she will wear starting July 1, 2016.

Alison then gave an emotional speech, thanking her husband and family and fellow Rotarians for all of their support during the past year.  She specifically thanked her Board members for the great job they did and ended with announcing Jeanne MacLaren as the “Rotarian of the Year”, presenting all of them with a gift of a special bottle of wine.

President-Elect Craig Brown then spoke about how it was going to be hard walking in Alison’s shoes but with Rotarians stepping up, it was going to be a great year.  He then presented his new Board members gifts from his recent trip to the 2016 Rotary International Convention in Seoul, Korea.
We at RB Sunrise Rotary want to thank Alison Farrin for being an outstanding President 2015-2016, a compassionate person, a great Rotarian, and leading us by example of what service above self is all about.

Newest member of our Rotary Family

On Saturday, June 18, 2016, Jon and Brie Shea welcomed a new member of their family.  Jon was thrilled that Savanna Jane Shea arrived just in time for Father's Day.  Jon says that he will miss the meeting on Tuesday morning because he will be too busy that morning being a daddy!

Savanna Jane Shea all dressed up for Father's Day!

Is your member profile up to date?

June 30 is the end of this Rotary year.  It is also the deadline for updates to your membership information to be corrected on the Rotary International website.  Rotary has transitioned in the last few years to increasing use of the digital methods for members to access and maintain their contact information.  Clubs and districts no longer get paper copies of dues invoices and membership rosters.  Because our club has been using ClubRunner for our club management tasks as welll as for our newsletter and website, our club membership records are very accurate.  In order to maintain that accuracy, every member needs to verify the contact and other information in our club membership profile.

In the last year, we have gained many new members.  Some of our members have had changes to employment or have retired. If anything in your situation has changed, please log on to our club website and verify that all of your contact and profile information is correct.  In order for your club leadership to better describe our club, please also fill in any missing information such as:

1. missing birthdays
2. anniversary dates
3. a short bio  - include interests
4. your sponsor
5. current phone and cell phone numbers
6. your correct email address
7. your current employer or business
8. your position title

Our club is as good as it is because we get to know each other.  Help your fellow members get to know you by filling in the information in the list above (and any other information) so that we can continue to be a strong and vibrant club.

Thanks for your help.
