District Dinner at Stone Brewery Bistro at Liberty Station

If you didn't register for the District 5340 Dinner and Beer Tasting Event at the Stone Brewery Bistro at Liberty Station, you are out of luck because the event is sold out!  Two of our members, Kim Muslusky and Jeanne MacLaren, are co-hosting this event.  In addition, our club will be acting as hosts for the event because club member volunteers will be helping Jeanne and Kim with check in and other tasks for the event.  Look forward to photos and a story in next week's SunRiser about this fun event.  So much for the idea that district events are boring!

GENI Newsletter

If you are new to our club, you probably haven't met Peter Meisen.  Over 10 years ago, Peter told our club about his nonprofit organization, GENI (Global Energy Network Institute).  Buckminster Fuller, a futurist proposed connecting all of the major land masses on the earth with an electric transmission grid.  Because we have the technology to be able to transfer energy over great distances and  there is always daylight somewhere in the world, a global energy tranfer network makes sense because the demand for energy would be balanced by the transfer of the energy loads of daytime from areas of production where the load would drop because of darkness.

Our club, at the suggestion of former president and honorary member, Rex Teets, made Peter an honorary member of our club.  As a result, Peter has been to many Rotary International Conventions as well as the Internationsl Assemblies that have been held here in San Diego.

Since Peter began his non-profit organization, there has been tremendous progress in the adoption of not only renewable energy sources, but also in the actual building of energy networks across political boundaries and continents around the world.

Rotational Breakfast are coming!

On February 23, we will not have a regular meeting at the Country Club of RB.  On that date, we will instead have "Rotational" Breakfast meetings a multiple locations - the offices of our members.  This is an opportunity to experience Rotary in the way Paul Harris began the idea of Rotary in 1905 when he invited several business friends to meet at his law office in Chicago. The meetings "rotated" among the offices of those early members until the number of members of the group became too large to fit in the various offices.  Because the fact that those early meetings "rotated" meeting locations, the name Rotary became attached to this new organization and that name has continued now for 111 years.   It is fitting that we do this on February 23 because that is the date of that first meeting!

District 5340 Training Assembly

On Saturday, March 9, 2016, District 5340 will hold a District Training Assembly at the Joan Kroc Center on the campus of the University of San Diego.  The morning event begins with registration/check in at 7:30 am and continue until noon.  There will be a general meeting and then multiple breakout sessions during the morning.  The breakout sessions are training presentations about the executive positions and avenues of service chairs for club officers.  There will also be presentations about the Rotary Foundation.  This is a great opportunity for new members to learn about Rotary and also to meet and mingle with Rotarians from the various clubs in our district.   As a member of RB Sunrise Rotary Club, half of the cost of your registration will be paid by the club.

There isn't time at club meetings to cover the topics that will be covered at this meeting.  Come and learn about Rotary!  There will be more information and a registration link provided in a future announcement in the SunRiser.

There are 2 district events that every Rotarian should attend each year.  One is the district training assembly and the other is the District Rotary Foundation Seminar.  The Rotary Foundation seminar is always chance to be inspired by learning what Rotarian are doing around the world with the global and district grants funded by the Rotary Foundation.

Rotarians at Work

Clear your calendar and reserve Saturday, April 30, 2016.  On this date, our club will be doing several projects for Rotarians at Work Day.  This is the day that all of the clubs in our district as well as clubs in numerous other districts around the world take time to do hands on projects.  Because there are so many projects happening on this one day, Rotary gets notices by the general public. Rotarians at work day began here in San Diego 10 years ago when the late PDG Bob Watson championed this idea.  That first year our district partnered with District 4100 (Tijuana).  Our club played a very active role in this event since the beginning because not only have we had a project or projects each year, Jim Roth, a past president of our club was very active in going to other districts to promote this idea.
