The speaker for August 26, 2014 will be Mark Kersey. Mr. Kersey is the 5th District city councilman. He will speaking to us about the state of the City of San Diego. This is your chance to ask Mr. Kersey questions about Rancho Bernardo issues.

The assignment for the Who Am I includes providing the positive thought at the beginning of the meeting and introducing guests and visiting Rotarians during the meeting.
Cheering for Rotary assignment includes selling opportunity drawing tickets.
Since the beginning of this Rotary year, we have had some membership roster changes.
1. Last month Jason Keckley resigned from our club because he felt that, because he is working 2 jobs and spending a lot of time with his family, he could not participate in our club projects and activities at the level that he wanted. He didn't want to be just a name on our membership roster It was his decision to resign at this time. He hopes to return in the future.
2. Mark Burdette resigned from our club last Tuesday over some philosophical difference he has with our district. Those differences have nothing to do with our club.
3. Rod Weiss has decided to resign from the club because his employment situation is still not as good as he had hoped it would be by now.
4. The board has voted to accept the application of a new member who will be inducted on Tuesday.
Rancho BEERnardo Update
1. Ad materials have been printed and are now available.
2. Tickets for this fundraising event will be distributed on Tuesday.
3. Plan to spend several hours on Saturday, September 20 to help prepare the Sike's Adobe Historic Farmstead Site for our event. There will be some painting of the farmstead building as well as preparation of the parking area to create rows and walkways for our event.

In February of this year Rotary International announced changes and updates to the Rotary Brand Symbols. This is the first time that Rotary has had a complete set of Rotary Brand standards.
For more than 100 years, Rotary has united eaders committed to applying their expertise to better their communities. Despite over a century of impact in communities around the world, Rotary does not get the recognition it deserves. We need to rethink how we tell our story so people everywhere understand what Rotary stands for, how we’re different, and why it matters. Note that the Rotary logo to the left now adds the word Rotary to the Wheel symbol. The adoption of the new brand standard is part of an overall strategy to focus on telling Rotary's Story more effectively. A survey of the public perception of Rotary showed that 4 in 10 persons had never heard of Rotary, another 4 in 10 had heard of Rotary, but didn't have any idea about Rotary actually does. The remaining 2 in 10 had heard about Rotary, but had some very negative opinions about Rotary. The think that Rotary is generally a club for older men who go to boring meetings and eat bad food. Obviously this is not the true picture about what Rotary is all about.
The two pictures below illustrate how branding logos have changed over the years for business and Rotary.
The need for Rotary and Rotarians to do a better job of telling the world about Rotary is obvious. For the public perception of Rotary to change, all Rotarians at every level have to be ready with an answer to the question - What is Rotary?
In the past, most of us would have said something about Rotary being founded in 1905 and now having 1.2 million members. We would say something about the Rotary Foundation. This is nice information, but it isn't the kind of information that will motivate the next generation of prospective members to want to join our ranks. The bad news about the next generation is that they don't think that Rotary is relevant to them. The good news is that they already have the values we are looking for in a new member. The next generation of prospective leaders have a heart for making a difference in the world. What they need to hear is how that is relevant to them and that we actually want them as member. The club culture at RB Sunrise already reflects our club's desire to engage younger members. What attracts the younger generation is the chance to personally make a difference and the friendships they make in an organizatiion where they fit in. This also is what is important in retaining these younger people.
In the weeks ahead, in the stories I post to our club website, I will be focusing these stories on the fact that Rotary has been making a difference in the world for over 100 years. I want your stories. What impact has being a Rotarian made in your life. Like Kim Muslusky's experience with Thousand Smiles as told in her story on the district website or the experience of Marc Nimetz finding out that our club was a place he fit in, we need to keep telling the story of our own 'aha' moments. The next generation is hungry to have that kind of experience. We need to make sure that they know that RB Sunrise Rotary is a place where they can have those gratifying experiences.
