The assignment for the Who Am I includes providing the positive thought at the beginning of the meeting and introducing guests and visiting Rotarians during the meeting.
Cheering for Rotary assignment includes selling opportunity drawing tickets.
International Service Chair Paul Gorman has identified a global grant opportunity for our club. Paul has not only identified a project, he has discovered a way for our club to fund the required amount in order to get a district grant and ultimately a Rotary Foundation grant. Rotary World Peace Conference
Our district and 5 others in Southern California are planning a multi-district Peace Conference for 2015-16. This conference will be held on January 15 &16, 2016 at the Ontario Convention Center in Ontario, California. We have been working on plans for over a year already. The conference will be a two day conference with 13 separate breakout sessions going on simultaneously on conflict resolution solutions to major issues in Personal life and home, School, Business, Community, Internationally, Film/TV/Media, International Trade, and much more.
Friday Jan 30, 2015, we got the news that RI President Elect Ravi Ravindran and Trustee Chair elect Ray Klinginsmith had selected the Rotary World Peace Conference 2016 hosted by the six Southern California Rotary Districts to be one of the Presidential Conference series based on the Areas of Focus for 2015-16. We applied for our conference to represent all of Rotary in 2015-16. Friday, we got the news that RI President Elect Ravi Ravindran and Trustee Chair elect Ray Klinginsmith had selected the Rotary World Peace Conference 2016 hosted by the six Southern California Rotary Districts to be one of the Presidential Conference series based on the Areas of Focus for 2015-16.
That said the Rotary World Peace Conference 2016 is now the Presidential Conference on Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution.
Paul Gorman's Global Grant Proposal for RB Sunrise Rotary Club
This is to provide you with information on a Global Grant that RB Sunrise has been asked to participate in. The grant is to purchase a maternal health ambulance for a remote village in Nigeria. In addition to the web site information, we asked the sponsors several other questions about this project. Here are the questions and answers that were provided:
Since there are no passable roads in the area to be served, how would you be handling the infrastructure issue of roads and other logistics?
There is a road. At the height of the rainy season. The road is only passable with a 4WD vehicle. There is ongoing advocacy with local and state government and private sector to secure the grading and improvement of the road.
2. Since the infrastructure is lacking, how will you handle on-going maintenance?
AMURT takes responsibility for vehicle maintenance
3. Where will you get fuel, oil, tires, and repair parts?
The ambulance will be used exclusively for patient referral. The vehicle will be refuled every second referral to Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State where the nearest Tertiary Medical Hospital is located. Fuel is also available at Effium Town, about 30 minutes away, and at Ezzangbo Junction, about 1 hour 15 minutes away.
4. Who will drive the vehicle?
A full time driver will be employed for the ambulance. He will be paid partially by the Akprata Health Centre and partially by AMURT.
6. Where will the vehicle be located when not in use?
The vehicle will be stationed at the Akparata Health Center at all times. After returning from an ambulance referral, it will be at the heatlh center until the next referral.
In the Calendar year 2014, the two ambulances stationed at AMURT assisted health centers in Ikwo and Abakaliki LGA 113 referrals combined. 68 of the referrals were obstetric emergencies. Many lives were saved. More stats are available.
Finally, FINANCES. As you can see from the web site, the project is still in need of about $6000. Caster Family Foundation - which contributed a significant amount of money for our Fresh Start project- is offering to donate $3000 through our RB Sunrise Foundation. This would then be matched by $3000 in District funds. Therefore, the only contribution being made directly by RB Sunrise would be our DDF, with no cash contribution.
At present, RB Sunrise does not have any other Global Grants planned for this fiscal year. Therefore, this is an opportunity for us to participate in a good Global Grant project at no direct cost to the club.
At or before our next Board meeting, Feb. 19, I will be making a motion that RB Sunrise authorize this project, and accept about $3000 from the Caster Family Foundation to be matched by District Funds.
Once that is authorized, I will notify Caster Family Foundation of our approval, and they will proceed to authorize the expenditure of $3000 from their funds.
