The assignment for the Who Am I includes providing the positive thought at the beginning of the meeting and introducing guests and visiting Rotarians during the meeting.
Cheering for Rotary assignment includes selling opportunity drawing tickets.
If you like classical music and missed the special Rotary concert for the International Youth Symphony, you still have an opportunity to hear this excellent ensemble of musicians from San Diego and around the world. In what has become a grand tradition, the La Jolla Music Society kicks off their Summerfest series of concerts with a free concert at Scripps Park (La Jolla Cove) on Wednesday, July 30 at 7 PM.
The stage is set up in Scripps Park at La Jolla Cove with the Pacific Ocean in the background. As you watch the sunset, you will get to hear the acclaimed La Jolla Music Society Orchestra perform. Then there will a bonus portion of the concert when the International Youth Symphony will perform. The IYS is composed of musicians from the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory and District 5340 Youth Exchange Musicians. One of the works performed by IYS will have 2 soloists.
Come and enjoy a free concert in Scripps Park. Plan to arrive early because this popular event brings a crowd that overwhelms the limited parking in the area.

This is a story about how volunteer vaccinators have been helped by cooperation from the government to reduce the number of new cases of polio in Nigeria. The new low in the number of new cases promises that Nigeria will soon join the list of Nations where polio has been eliminated
Since humans first learned to communicate via speech, telling stories has been the way in which we have communicated information most effectively. Before the advent of writing, the telling of stories was the only way to communicate important information about the world. As humans we are hard wired to respond to stories at a deeper level than we would to information that is a recitation of facts.
At the District Membership Seminar on Saturday, July 26, one of the take away lessons was the fact that in attempting to invite a new person to come to a Rotary Club meeting, it is far more productive to tell them about why you are a Rotarian. All of us have incidents we recall about how we felt when we learned that our club's effort made a difference in someone's life. Whether it was seeing the joy on the face of the mother of a family getting a house in Tijuana as the result of a Corazon project or hearing about how POVA helped a child's life was changed by riding a horse, we all have a story to tell.
To a new person, hearing you tell that kind of story is a very effective way to get them to want to have that kind of experience for themself.
Our club website needs to have written versions of these kind of stories. Writing down your story is the best way to insure that your story doesn't get forgotten. Can you remembers stories from 6 months ago. Most of us will forget the good things that happen in our life unless we write down the details and then periodically retell the story.
We joke about someone who tells the same story over and over again. However, remembering good things is essential to having our lives be meaningful. At the International Youth Symphony concert on Saturday evening, I learned how one youth exchange musicians life was changed as a result of coming to San Diego last year for District 5340 Musicamp. The young man had already decided to go to college to study music. However when he returned to the UK last year, he changed is college application and added 2 sentences about participating in the International Youth Symphony here is San Diego. As a result he was accepted in the Royal Academy of Music!
