The member assigned to Rotary Minute is the assigned Greeter for that day and also is tasked with selling opportunity drawing tickets.
Brian Maienschein, currently serving in the California State Assembly, visited the RB Sunrise Rotary breakfast meeting on Tuesday, September 20, 2016. He is a Republican representing the 77th district, which encompasses parts of northeastern San Diego. Prior to serving in the state assembly, he was a member of the San Diego City Council.
He started out by talking about his wanting to get things done in Sacramento instead of giving speeches and avoiding controversial bills. In the time Brian has been in Sacramento, he has passed 25 bills compared to the closest Republican who has passed only three bills. Four examples of bills he has worked on that have recently passed include:
The sudden cardiac arrest bill that educates parents and sports trainers on what cardiac arrests are, as there are warning signs.
Animal welfare legislation.Brian gave an example of the Michael Vick case where 48 out of 49 fighting dogs seized were adopted and only one was euthanized. In California, those same dogs would have all been immediately euthanized. This bill allows seized animals to be examined, and if possible, retrained and adopted out.
In law enforcement, rape kits are very backlogged, and this bill encourages those cases to be expedited by allowing the victim or victim’s family to track the kit.
No medical surprise bill that protects consumers from surprise bills when services are performed by out-of-network doctors at a participating hospital.
These are all laws that are great examples of what Republicans, Democrats and the governor can and should do. There is some cause for optimism in California as term limits have been changed from six to 12 years. He went on to explain that the assemblymen “class” he is in is less partisan and there is a tremendous difference now from before, as essentially the legislature will retain the same class over the next few years. Some of the groundwork of working together is shown by these four bills.
Brian finished by thanking the RB Sunrise Rotary Club, his former Rotary home, in supporting him when he first started out running for the City Council. He stated that when the time comes when he returns to Rotary, he will come back and be a member of our great Club.
Last week, Gordy sent the Sponsorship Form and event Fact Sheet to you. Click the links below to get the Sponsorship Tools.
One tool is a "cover letter" that you can customize by adding your contacts name and address (open and look at it!! You will see what I mean) for all your friends, family members, neighbors & business owners in the area that you are emailing or mailing the sponsorship requests to.
Other tools are two versions of the "Sponsorship Form" and event "Fact Sheet" for you - one is both documents combined into (1) 3-page document, and then in case you want to print some - the same documents are attached a two separate documents. (Just in case you lost that last email)
Our goal is to raise $75,000+ this year. That is 50% more than last year. We have more Rotarians this year than last year, and the event has growing momentum... With the event being moved to Webb Park we will be establishing a phenomenal annual event for our community. It should be easier than ever for you to bring in those Sponsors!!
Remember, the best way to get more sponsors is to ASK. In person and by phone, you never know which one of the people you interact with each day is just waiting for the opportunity to participate.
Thanks in advance - this years BEERnardo will be the best yet!!
Let us know if you can think of something that will help us all promote this event and find this years Sponsors.
