The member assigned to Cheer for Rotary is the assigned Greeter for that day and also is tasked with selling opportunity drawing tickets.
We had a large number of guest at our meeting last week. There were 7 students honored for "Service Above Self." With each of them were parents, so that contributed to the number of guests. Mike Miller, who has spearheaded this award since its inception, presented each of the students with their award. This youth program recognized 5th grade students for kindness and compassion they demonstrate on the school campus. They are nominated by other students and aren't informed about what they actually did to be nominated.
Last Week's Program
Our speaker was Regina Dowdy, a dental student at the Hernab Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She spoke about a program that takes takes dental students and members of the faculty of the dental school to do dental treatment in Ensenada, Mexico.
The students provide the treatment under the supervision of the accompanying faculty. The treatment provided includes dental hygiene instruction and providing toothbrushes: dental cleaning procedures, restoring decayed teeth, and doing extractions. This outreach is part of the activity of the Rotaract club at the dental school. The experience that these dental students gain is part of their training at USC, but their participation in this program is on a volunteer basis. (Most dental schools operate clinics onsite to allow dental students to gain clinical experience by providing treatment under the supervision of the school's faculty. Schools also supply students to charity clinics for students to have additional experience, again under the supervision of licensed dentists.)
Are you registered to attend President Karen's "Demotion" Party this Saturday ? This party is an event that should not be missed.
