Sad News This Week for our RB Sunrise Rotary Family
At last Tuesday's regular club meeting, we learned that member Steve Redd had passed away on Sunday afternoon, June 8. Steve had apparently been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma several months ago. Several days before his passing, he had received the second of a planned series of chemotherapy treatment. Steve apparenly had to go to the hospital at the end of week and it was there that his liver shut down. At this time there isn't any word of plans for a memorial service for Steve. A fruit basket was sent to Noreen by our club. Please do not call Noreen, but you may send cards.
Later in the day last Tuesday, we were further saddened to learn that on Saturday, June 7, Inan Linton's husband, Al ("Bugs") lost his battle with esophageal cancer. It was only several months ago that he and Inan learned of his diagnosis. Inan immediately took a leave of absence from our club and from her job a Belmont Village.
This morning at 10:00 am at the Mission Church at Santa Ysabel, a large group of friends and family gathered for Al's memorial service. !3 members and 4 of their spouses from RB Sunrise Rotary were there to show our support for Inan. What most of us did not know was the fact that Al was a member of the Ipai Nation of the Kumeyaay Native Americans. At the little Mission Cemetery there were quite a few grave markers of members of Al's family. There was a memorial mass celebrated in the church followed immediate by a graveside service.
Because of a scheduling conflict at CCRB and in deference to the sad news of the week. Jim Stewart's Demotion Party was postponed. At this time, there is no word about a new date for the Demotion Party.
Rancho BEERnardo Festival
Yesterday evening the planning committee for our Sept 27 Rancho BEERnardo Festival decided to hold the event at the Sike's Adobe Historic Farmstead just north of Lake Hodges. After reviewing the logistics of moving a large number of people to and from CCRB via shuttles, the committee decided that this was a larger problem and decided that CCRB was not suitable for the event. It was then that the decision was made to utilize the Sike's Adobe venue. The Historic Farmstead is pleased to have our event because it will raise awareness in the community of this facility. It is also a win for our club because there is adequate parking and space for the all of the numerous booths from the breweries that have committed to this event.
Carl's Governors Dinner
There is still time to sign up to attend this dinner. Since Carl is the first member of our club to be selected as District Governor, it is essential that our club have numerous members at that dinner. These dinners are your chance to meet other Rotarians in the district and get a bigger picture of what a dynamic district we have. By attending a district event, you will have the opportunity to meet Rotarians from many clubs and learn that you instantly have a connection.
In the picture above, you see Jim and Irene Dunny standing at the top of the Sydney Harbor Bridge. They were part of the Rotary PolioPlus fundraising event in which the Bridge Climb Company would donate half of each participant's climbing fee to PolioPlus. This climb was advertised as an attempt to break the world record (315) held by Oprah Winfrey and her fans for the largest number of people on the bridge at one time. The Sydney Harbor Bridge is the largest bridge in the world that can be climbed by tourists
On May 30, Rotarians from around the world were able to set 2 records - The largest number of people (340) from one group on the bridge at one time and a second record for the largest number of flags (278) flown from the bridge at one time. This event raised over $40,000 for PolioPlus. As you can see from the picture, the view from the top of the bridge was spectacular. This was quite a media event at Sydney. After everyone got on the upper level of the bridge and brought out the flags, several news helicopters circled the bridge taking news video for the local television stations. There also were multiple photographers on the bridge.
The climb itself was exhilarating and the view from the top was fantastic. It was not as scary or difficult as we imagined in advance. This was a once in a lifetime event that is now a cherished memory of our visit to Sydney.
*District Council "Governor's Dinner" is on June 24, 2014 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Mission Valley. It will mark the end of Carl's year as District Governor. At this meeting, Carl will be honored for his service this year. In turn, Carl will be recognizing club achievements for this year.
RB Sunrise Rotary Club needs to have a large number of members and their spouses at this event to help Carl celebrate the success of his year as District Governor. It is at this dinner that our club will surrender the banner we have had as the home club of the district governor.
