The assignment for the Who Am I includes providing the positive thought at the beginning of the meeting and introducing guests and visiting Rotarians during the meeting.
I was new to Rancho Bernardo when I started my own Farmers Insurance Agency in February 2011. I joined a networking group in order to build my business. It was in this networking group that I met Steve Redd. Steve was in the automobile sales business.
I had a few people invite me to join their Rotary club. I went to a few different meetings and realized their crowd wasn't "my type." The clubs I visited didn't seem at all interested in me and the members didn't look like they were interested in someone my age.
A friend of mine mentioned to me that his daughter needed a car for college. Because I knew Steve was in the automobile business, I referred this friend to Steve. Within days, my friend's daughter had a great car for college. Steve called me to thank me for the referral and suggested that we meet for a beer. I accepted his offer.
When Steve and I met shortly thereafter, he discussed the wonderful opportunity of becoming a Rotarian. I was quick to dismiss his invitation as I assumed he was a member of one of the clubs I had already visited. Steve didn't take no for an answer. When he pressed me about the clubs I had visited, he quickly assured me that his club was different . He encouraged me to come to one meeting and check out his club.
I came to that one meeting back in October 2012 and have been a member ever since. Joining Rotary has been a great decision. I can now give back to the community that has given so much to me already.
Steve unfortunately passed away a few months ago. I will always be grateful to him for his persistence in persuading me to just check out the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club. I am now co-treasurer of RB Sunrise Rotary and have been involved with the club's projects that make a difference in the local community and in the world.
If you want to be involved with great people who are working to make the world a better place, come to a meeting like I did. RB Sunrise Rotary meets at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo every Tuesday at 7:00 am.

One of the traditions in District 5340 that occurs at the Governor's Awards Dinner is the transfer of the Banner for District Governor's Home Club. For the 2013-14 Rotary Year, Rancho Bernardo had the privelege to displaying this banner at every club meeting because our Past President Carl Kruse was District Governor. Now that Carl has "passed the torch" to 2014-15 District Governor Louise Andres, the banner had to be transferred to the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club, DG Louise's home club.
At the Governor's Dinner on June 24, after DG Louis Andres was installed, members of our club who were present all gathered on one side of the stage and then our outgoing club president, Jim Stewart, took the banner to the stage and presented the banner to the incoming president of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club, Ron Kohl. The Governor's Home Club Banner now will reside with that club for this entire Rotary year. .
Because a new Rotary year begins on July 1 and July 4th is the Independence Day holiday, our new president's first "official" duty is ride in the Spirit of the Fourth Parade in Rancho Bernardo. This year, President Karen represented us in the parade.
Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary has a significant history of additional participation in the Spirit of the Fourth Parade. Past President Kendra Jeffcoat and her husband Jay (a Kiwanian!!!) were announcers at the reviewing stand on Bernardo Center Drive. For at least the last 2 years, Jay Riordan and his wife Brenda replaced Kendar and Jay as announcers at the Bernardo Center site. The parade is a highlight of the Fourth of the daytime July Festivities in Rancho Bernardo. The parade is a family event and some families and their chiildren actually participate by walking in the parade.
Congratulations to President Karen on a great beginning for her year as our President.
Reminder to members: Our Demotion Dinner is this Friday, July 11, 2014 at 6:00 pm at the Radisson Hotel on West Bernardo Court. Please register online so that we can know you are coming and can have your nametag ready for you.
President Karen's first official meeting will be a Club Assembly. Rotary Internatioinal requires that presidents of every Rotary Club have at least 2 Club Assemblies every year. Tuesday's meeting will the first on for the year to fulfull the requirement. Come and find out what goals Karen has for the year ahead. This is also your chance to ask questions or respond to the plans for the upcoming year.
