RB Sunrise Rotary to Beautify Espola Rd at Poway High

RB Sunrise Rotary is participating in an effort initiated by current RB President Ian H. S. Riseley. His theme for his term, 2017-18 is Rotary, Making  a Difference.

He is asking all 1.2 million Rotarians to plant a tree.  His goal was to have this completed by Earth Day, April 22, 2018.  RB Sunrise Rotary. Because of the amount of planning required, RB Sunrise Rotary has elected to make this tree planting project its Rotarians at Work project for 2018.

At Poway High School, old plantings were removed in the area of the football field adjacent to Espola Road.  Dale Long, RB Sunrise project coordinator for this project, has been working with the  maintenance staff at the high school to get the site ready.  Such things as the exact location for each tree needs to be preplanned so that that proper irrigation and other considerations are finalized.

The site for the beautification planting of trees is along a drainage canal adjacent to Espola Road.  The plantings will assist if reducing the potential for damage in the area due to erosion.

Rotarians at Work is a Rotary Program that began here in San Diego over 10 years ago.  Former District Governor, the late Bob Watson, suggested that on one day Rotary clubs could do community projects such as school cleanup, tree planting, and maintenance projects around their community.  District 9100, Northern Baja California, Mexico joined District 5340, San Diego and Imperial Counties, California in the first year.  Since that time, Rotary districts around the world had participated in this event that occurs on the last Saturday in April each year.

RB Sunrise's project this year will definitely make a difference.  The plantings will beautify the site and also be a critical environmental solution to control erosion.

District Website Issues

If you have tried to access the District 5340 website, you may have encountered an error message. At last Thursday's board meeting, I learned about the difficulties that several board members had in trying to access the District 5340 website. They were trying to register for the upcoming training assembly.

The problem seems to be the way that certain internet browsers read the security certificate on the District 5340 website home page.  The best solution is to use embedded link in the story just below this.  That link will take you directly to the information and registration page for the assembly.  The district is aware of the problem and I will followup with any new information after conferring with leaders at the Training Assembly on Saturday, March 24.

Members are encouraged to let me know if they encounter a problem with either our club website, our bulletin, or the District 5340 website. Email information about the problem you experience to: Jim Dunny.

District 5340 Training Assembly is coming up!

Held only once a year, District Training Assembly offers training for Rotarians including club officers, directors, and committee chairs to help them become more effective club leaders. All club members, especially Red Badgers, are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Come learn club management tips and best practices from other Rotarians at District Training on March 24, 2018 at the Joan Kroc Center for Peace & Justice on the USD campus. Online registration is the same as previous year's at $25 per person. This is a great opportunity to learn about Rotary and network with other Rotarians. We expect full attendance for each class, so don't miss out. Get training for your position and meet other Rotarians to swap ideas in the breakout sessions at this assembly.

Registration ends on March 21, 2018

Immediately following this event at the same venue is the Global Grants Management Seminar.  Anyone who is planning to submit a grant needs to attend this seminar in order to learn the proper way to get funding and submit the proper applications in time.  This seminar is essential to know how to get the application in on time. Preregistration is not required for this seminar.  Every club is required to have at least 2 representatives at this seminar in order for the club to be eligible to participate in a global grant for 2018-2019.

Great News! Project P-1889 has been fully pledged and the April 21, 2018 house build #2 is a GO! The Del Mar Rotary club contributed towards this project and will be participating in the house build along with our club. From what my contact at the Del Mar club has told me is that they have a pretty good amount of interested members who want to participate.

I have again reserved Jim Hughes' 15 passenger van from our district 5340, for the house build. The pick-up point on Saturday is at the Park n Ride off the 15 at Scripps Poway Parkway at 5:45 - 6:00am.  Please check your inbox for the recent email with all of the details of this event.
