District 5340 - Making History in Polio Eradication Campaign

We are on the brink of creating history - we, as Rotarians, have played the central role in bringing the world close to the eradication of polio.  And we, as Rotarians, will be the ones to deliver the final blow that eliminates this horrific disease.

As vice-chair for the End Polio Now: Countdown to History Committee, I am part of the Rotary team that is leading the charge that will bring down this dying but savage beast.  We have the benefit of a 2-to-1 match to our Rotary Foundation by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation of $100,000,000 per year for every $50,000,000 Rotary contributes towards eradication over a three-year period.

The news on the front lines is encouraging.  Only three endemic countries remaining:
  • Nigeria with its last case reported on August 21, 2016
  • Pakistan with its last case reported on November 15, 2017
  • Afghanistan with its last case reported on January 6, 2018
In 2017, there were only 22 cases of polio - 14 in Afghanistan and eight in Pakistan.  There are currently only three cases of polio in 2018, all in Afghanistan where I continue to personally be involved.  All of the endemic countries face the problem of brutal conflict that challenge access to the populations that most need the vaccinations.  Nevertheless, progress has been remarkable even under these conditions.

District 5340 has stepped up to the plate in a very big way, with Rotarians in this district having contributed over $930,000 this Rotary year for polio eradication.  I encourage everyone in our generous district to keep polio at the forefront of their philanthropic endeavors.  If so, our district could make its own history by crossing the $1,000,000 mark in giving to polio eradication this Rotary year.

Rotary's Area of Focus

This group of photos from the Rotary International website illustrates the Rotary Foundation's Areas of Focus.  The diverse nature of these efforts gives every Rotarian a place to find a cause to support and be passionate about.

I know that I was shocked when I joined Rotary 18 years ago to learn just how much Rotary was doing to make a difference in the world.  I also was pleased to learn that the funding model used by the Rotary Foundation insures that nearly all of the money donated to the foundation is actually used efficiently and effectively. Changing lives is literally what Rotary is all about.

Upcoming House Build in Mexico

Great News! Project P-1889 has been fully pledged and the April 21, 2018 house build #2 is a GO! The Del Mar Rotary club contributed towards this project and will be participating in the house build along with our club. From what my contact at the Del Mar club has told me is that they have a pretty good amount of interested members who want to participate.

I have again reserved Jim Hughes' 15 passenger van from our district 5340, for the house build. The pick-up point on Saturday is at the Park n Ride off the 15 at Scripps Poway Parkway at 5:45 - 6:00am.  Please check your inbox for the recent email with all of the details of this event.
