"Like any other non-profit, nobody NEEDS a Rotary club to exist" observed our speaker at this week's breakfast. When layered over the recognition that many people in the community don't even know what Rotary is, it adds up to a huge need to market Rotary in general and this club in particular.

Rob Weinberg, Chief Strategist of The MarketBuilding Team, San Diego Union Tribune Columnist, and a member of the RB Sunrise Rotary Club since 2004, then walked our club through a handful of easily utilized tools to grow the group's visibility, membership, and fundraising capabilities.

"We all have a problem," he observed of Rotary, Kiwanis, and Lions. "Our global membership is dropping and we're competing for time with other groups, jobs, family, and sleep. In order to survive, this club must find a way to stand out of the crowd."

The key, he maintained, was the Rotary wheel; a logo known by millions, though not necessarily understood. "Wearing your pin encourages conversations with clients and strangers at Vons," was just one of dozens of examples he provided.

MOST IMPORTANT: stop quoting statistics about Rotary's 1.25 million members and make your stories personal. "We all have a tale of how Rotary has touched our lives, and sharing that story with non-members helps humanize the organization and include the wider community into our narrative."

Weinberg is currently presenting ways to grow Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions Clubs all around San Diego County. To learn about that or his marketing services, contact him at www.marketbuilding.com.
